Taisho period woodblock print poster with a young apprentice geisha.

Training to be a geisha was an education in entertainment – The young geisha would be in apprenticeship for a period of up to five years and learn to sing and dance and maybe play an instrument.

The woodblock print is by Yamamura Toyonari, a student of Ogata Gekko.

Toyonari was a collector of ukiyo-e prints and may be best known for his paintings and prints of famous Kabuki actors.
